2.6 Instructional Design
Candidates model and facilitate the effective use of research-based best practices in instructional design when designing and developing digital tools, resources, and technology-enhanced learning experiences. (PSC 2.6/ISTE 2f)
Artifact
This artifact, my Internet Lesson Plan, was a project I developed online using Weebly to organize and assist my students in learning how to use the image-editing application, PIXLR. These are lessons that I have used in my classroom for years, and much of the content and scaffolding of the lesson(s) included here are proven effective. For this project, I decided to compile these lessons, activities, and resources and create an internet-based resource. I even developed a few additional videos to round off my module and publish it to the site. This artifact is aimed at anyone on the Internet who may have an interest in learning more about PIXLR and its various capabilities. I also use these very resources (often included in my Learning Management System) for my in-class students. I also have this included on my educational website. All of the lessons and resources included in the artifact are my own lessons/activities that I developed for my classroom.
Standard 2.6, Instructional Design - model and facilitate the effective use of research-based best practices in instructional design when designing and developing digital tools, resources, and technology-enhanced learning experiences. My Weebly-based unit with links to demonstration videos shows my mastery of technology-rich resources to create a technology rich learning environment. I model research-based best practices by including multiple modes of information and content that is easy to find and navigate. By providing videos of different levels and lessons/activities that build on one another, I am scaffolding content and building differentiation into my module so that I can focus more on facilitating my lessons to help bridge gaps and focus more on students’ individual needs as they arise.
This is another artifact that I created that helped me build my confidence during my graduate studies. I am very pleased by the way it turned out. This is only one tool in my toolbox regarding online technology-rich resources, but I like how it is organized and you can find much of what you need in one place. In a sense, it is better than my LMS, because finding resources in my LMS can get complicated at times. One thing I would like to do differently or improve on is that I want to embed my videos directly into the pages themselves as opposed to including links. I find that students seem to engage more with the videos when they see them on the page. They naturally interact with video if they know it is video.
By creating my Internet Lesson Plan, I helped increase the impact for students in my classroom, but also anyone who has access to the lessons online. I assess my student work, by observation and projects that they submit to me for a grade. I also can assess how others feel about my lessons online, by viewing analytics, or reading comments to my videos. I have one or two videos on YouTube that have generated many views over the year or so that they have been online.
