My Coaching Reflection Journal was created to reflect on my coaching field experience based on the Impact Cycle (Knight). I am blessed to have found such a helpful colleague like Ms. Penny to coach. She was very easy to work with. I was uneasy about the coaching experience, but it was great to have a framework like the Impact Cycle to use as I implemented my coaching sessions. My coaching sessions benefit both Ms. Penny and me, as she was unfamiliar with the technology that I helped her use to implement and augment her lessons.
In 5.2 Professional Learning, candidates were to develop and implement technology-based professional learning that aligns to state and national professional learning standards, integrates technology to support face-to-face and online components, models principles of adult learning, and promotes best practices in teaching, learning, and assessment. My Coaching Journal is evidence that I can develop and implement technology-based learning that is aligned to state and national standards. By using Jim Knight’s Impact Cycle, I was able to promote best practices in teaching and learning, as well as model principles of adult learning. Our goals that we agreed to after our first meeting integrated technology and supported online components. The 2020-2021 school year (COVID year) also had us meet both online and face-to-face. By using technology to work remotely this year, I am better poised to coach and teach online, which supports many of my goals that I have for my own classroom. I really appreciate the guidance and forms that the Impact Cycle provided me and Ms. Penny. We both encountered several strategies that we were not previously aware of. I feel this is an important aspect of coaching. You need a wide array of strategies and approaches to assess and support teachers who teach different subjects by using different strategies. Overall, I enjoyed the coaching experience and will use the Impact Cycle in the future.
My Coaching Journal artifact helped me reflect on the strategies presented in the Impact Cycle. Overall, it went well, but there could be improvements. As noted in my journal, I could have done better at personalizing the coaching sessions. I was nervous and inexperienced at coaching, so this led me to regurgitate some of the strategies. I am glad that the book prepared me for this; however, with experience, I know that I will be better at coaching. I also would like to utilize the Impact Cycle in many different subject areas and with a variety of educators. There’s nothing that can replace experience. I have not coached anyone since this field experience and that’s also something I regret. I would welcome the opportunity to work with another teacher.
This artifact was developed to assist both myself and Ms. Penny. It provided me with experience coaching others to utilize educational technology and it gave Ms. Penny more confidence to use technology in her classroom. I am glad she enjoyed the experience. She is now better prepared to formatively assess concepts on the fly. I am better prepared to assess and respond to anyone who may need coaching in the future.
